rupaka alankaara ( रुपक अलङ्कार )

Definition of रूपक:

यत्स्याद्विषयिरुपेण विषयस्योपरञ्जनम्|
रुपकं तद्विधाभेदताद्रुप्यावसितं विदु:||

If there is विषयि (उपमान) does उपरञ्जन of विषय (उपमेय), it is known as रूपक.
रूपक is of two types: ताद्रूप्यरूपकम्‌ and अभेदरूपकम्‌.

Their definition is as follows

आरोपे सत्यभेदस्याभेदरुपकमुच्यते।
ताद्रूप्यरुपकं तत्स्यात्ताद्रूप्यस्य स चेद्भवेत्‌॥

When there is आरोप (accusation) of ताद्रूप्य, it is known as ताद्रूप्यरूपकम्‌.
when there is आरोप (accusation) of अभेद, it is known as अभेदरूपकम्‌.

मुखं चन्द्रः (face is moon)- अभेदरूपकम् (There is no difference between मुख and चन्द्र) ‌

मुखमपरः चन्द्रः (the face is another moon) - ताद्रूप्यरुपकम्‌ (There is difference between मुख and चन्द्र. Face is called another moon)

तद्द्वयं च त्रिधाssधिक्यन्यूनत्वानुभयोक्तिभिः।
These two types of Rupaka are again divided in three types: आधिक्य, न्यूनत्व, अनुभय (absence of both) . Thus, in toto there are six types of Rupaka.

1. अधिकाभेदरूपकम्
definition:
पूर्वावस्थात आरोप्यमाणस्याधिक्यवर्णनम्।
वर्ण्यायां चेदवस्थायामधिकाभेदरुपकम्॥
When there is improvement in the description of the described as compared to the previous condition, it is known as अधिकाभेदरूपकम्.
example:
असुरासुरविक्षुभितादहिराजधरेशजलनिधेरुदितम्।
वितरत्यजरामरताममितां स्मितममृतमेतदनुसरताम्॥
Here there is अभेद of अहिराजधरेश and जलनिधि, and स्मित and अमृत. But the ocean's description is improved by the addition of the adjective असुरासुरविक्षुभित, same way the nectar's description is improved by the adjective वितरत्यजरामरताममितां. Therefore this is an example of अधिकाभेदरूपकम्.
The first stanza is an example of समस्त अधिकाभेदरूपकम्
The second stanza is an example of व्यस्त अधिकाभेदरूपकम्

2. न्यूनाभेदरूपकम्
Definition:
न्यूनता प्रागवस्थातश्चेन्न्यूनाभेदरूपकम्।
When there is diminition in the description from the previous condition, it is known as न्यूनाभेदरूपकम्.
Example
अनुपदमनुपमफणिपतिगिरिमणिगुणगरिममसृणिता कविता।
त्रय्येव पौरूषेयी धुनोति दुरितं तनोति सुखममितम्॥
Here there is Rupaka between कविता and त्रयी. The त्रयी is originally अपौरूषेय, but to compare it with the कविता, it has been downgraded to पौरूषेय. Therefore, this is an example of न्यूनाभेदरूपकम्.

3.अनुभयाभेदरूपकम्‌
Definition
आधिक्यन्यूनताभावेsनुभयाभेदरूपकम्‌॥

When there is no increment or decrease in the description as compared to the previous condition, it is known as अनुभयाभेदरूपकम्‌.

example:
षट्पदमन्त्रोद्गीतं सकमलरेखं रसोदयनिकेतम्‌।
कलयामि श्रीशरणं नलिनं साक्षाद्रमापतेश्चरणम्‌॥

षट्पद - a specific type of vedic metre / a bumble bee
रसा - earth (the earth is supposed to have been created by Lord's feet)
रस - nectar (the reservoir of nectar for lotus
श्री - the birthplace of Lakshmi / the reservoir of the beauty.

In this shloka, the feet of the Lord has been compared with the lotus. Here there is no उत्कर्ष or अपकर्ष as compared to the previous state. Therefore it is अनुभयाभेदरूपकम्‌.

ताद्रूप्यरूपकेsप्येवं त्रैविध्यं सद्भिरूह्यताम्‌॥
Taadrupya rupaka is also of the same three types

4.अधिकताद्रूप्यरूपकम्‌

Example

परमन्दरसंक्षोभं न भजति जात्वपि भुजङ्गगिरिनेतुः।

स्वान्तसरित्कान्तो स्मिन्‌ जयति समुद्रो बुधान्न रञ्जयति॥

परमं दरेण (because of great fear) or परं मन्दरेण (by excessive churning by Mandara mountain)

परमन्दरसंक्षोभं न भजति इति - The ocean doesn't fear nor gets agitated by the churning by Mandara. Therefore it is explicitly showing the increment in the quality of the ocean. Therefore, it is an example of अधिकताद्रूप्यरूपकम्‌.

Example 2:

गर्जन्विषं प्रदत्ते पर्जन्यश्शीतको मलिनवक्त्रः।

फणिगिरिपतिपर्जन्यः प्रददात्यमृतमपि सुखसुखेनैव॥

पर्जन्य: - rain

शीतक - अलसः (makes lazy) or शीतं करोति (cools the atmosphere) or शीतं कं (gives cool water)

मलिनवक्त्रः - which has नीलं मुखं (whose anterior part is naturally of dark colour) (for Lord Shiv - the neck is blue)

विषं - गरलं जलं च प्रदत्ते (gives water) (for Shiva - the poison in the neck)

Thus the description shows the superiority of फणिगिरिपतिपर्जन्य over प्रसिद्धपर्जन्य. Therefore it is an example of अधिकताद्रूप्यरूपकम्‌.

5. न्यूनताद्रूप्यरूपकं

प्रणमन्ति ये भजन्ति च फणिगिरिकान्तं स्तुवन्ति चाञ्चन्ति ।

तेsमी भगवद्भक्ता भुमीजनुषोsपरे मुक्ताः ॥

Here by the words अपरे मुक्ताः the भगवद्भक्ताः are given a lower status than the प्रसिद्धमुक्ताः because of their birth in this mundane world. Therefore it is an example of न्यूनताद्रूप्यरूपकं.

6. अनुभयताद्रूप्यरूपकं

विबुधेभ्योsमृतवितरणनिपुणमिदं हरिणकिरणजनिशरणम्‌।

फणिधरणिधरशिरोमणिहृदयं जानीमहेsपरं जलधिम्‌॥

विबुध - gods or the learned men

अमृतवितरण - apportioning the Amrit after churning the ocean / spreading the knowledge

हरिणकिरण - the moon

जनिशरण - birthplace.

It refers to the mythological belief that the moon is born from the ocean, otherwise it is also believed that the moon is born from the mind.

अपरं जलधिं - There is no value judgement whether the ocean of the heart of the Lord is better or worse than the original ocean. Therefore it is an example of अनुभयताद्रूप्यरूपकं

AbhedarUpaka is of two types

अभेदरूपकं - संसर्गत्वे पदार्थत्वे.

Example:

चिन्तामणिरसि भजतां सन्तानो वा तरुस्त्वमब्जाक्ष।

हरिनीलाद्वैतं तव तनुरेत्यथवा तमालतादात्म्यम्‌ ॥

Here चिन्तामणि and सन्तानतरु show संसर्गरूपः अभेदः

whereas तनुः हरिनीलाद्वैतम्‌ तमालतादात्म्यम्‌ show पदार्थरूपः अभेदः

The अभेदरुपकं and तादात्म्यरूपकं can have उपपाद्य - उपपादकभाव. i.e. one can cause the other to exist.

example:

1.हारास्तवाम्बुधाराः कनकपटीयं तटित्प्रभारभटी ।

अम्बुरुहेक्षण तत्त्वय्यम्बुदतां नियतमेव जानीमः ॥

2.मन्दस्मिते सुधात्वं मन्दारत्वं तवाच्युत कटाक्षे ।

फाले बालेन्दुत्वं भाति तदम्भोनिधेरभिन्नस्त्वम्‌ ॥

Here in the first shloka, अभेदरूपक is उपपादक (that which causes) and तादात्म्यरूपक is उपपाद्यः (that which is caused) Whereas in the second shloka, the situation is reversed.

again in the first shloka, the उपपादक is अभेद संसर्गरूपः; whereas in the second shloka उपपाद्य is पदार्थरूप अभेदः

There are total of eight types of Rupaka according to the eastern grammarians
1. samastavastuvishayam saangam
2. ekadeshavivarti saangam
3. kevalam niravayavam
4. maalaarupam niravayam
5. kevalam shlishtaparamparitam
6. maalaarupam shlishtaparamparitam
7. kevalam ashlishtaparamparitam
8. maalaarupam ashlishtaparamparitam
प्राचां मते विभागोपि रूपकस्य निरूप्यते।

त्रिधा साङ्गं निरङ्गं च परम्परितमित्यदः ॥

समस्तवस्तुविषयमेकदेशविवर्ति च।

इति सावयवं चापि द्विविधं तत्र रूपकम्‌॥

We will also discuss the classification of Rupaka according to the Eastern / former Grammarians. It is of three types साङ्गम्‌, निरङ्गम्‌ and परम्परितम्‌
The साङ्गम्‌ is of two further types समस्तवस्तुविषयम्‌ and एकदेशविवर्ति.

1.सावयवं

यत्परस्परसापेक्षनिष्पत्तीनां निबध्यते ।
रूपकाणां तु संघातो भवेत्सावयवं हि तत्‌ ॥

1(A).समस्तवस्तुविषयम्‌ सावयवं
निरूपणेsवयविनोsवयवानां च शब्दतः ।
समस्तवस्तुविषयं भवेत्सावयवं हि तत्‌ ॥

Example:
हरिहृदयपञ्जरे नवमुक्तामणिहारजालके नद्धम्‌।
श्रीवत्सकीरहेतोर्दाडिमफलमेव कौस्तुभमणीन्द्रः ॥

Here the main Rupaka is between Dadimaphalam and kaustubhamanIndra. All other rupakas are supporting it. Therefore all other Rupakas are supporting one Rupaka. This is an example of समस्तवस्तुविषयम्‌ सावयवं.

Example 2:
सिंहधराधरशेखरसिंहलसंभूतमसितविद्योतम्‌ ।
श्रीरुचिकनकोपचितं शौरिमहानीलमाद्रिये हृदये ॥

1(B. एकदेशविवर्ति सावयवं

आरोप्यमाणं शाब्दं चेत्क्वचिदार्थं च कुत्रचित्‌ ।
एकदेशविवर्त्याख्यमिदं सावयवं विदुः ॥
Where there is mention of the Rupaka by words explicitly somewhere and by meaning implicitly somewhere, it is known as एकदेशविवर्ति सावयवं.

Example:
भवजलनिधिमतिविपुलं विविधमहावासनानदीशबलम्‌ ।
लोकोsयं तरतितरां काकोदरगिरिपतेरुपास्य कृपाम्‌ ॥
Here all other Rupakas are explicit. These explicit Rupakas lead to the implicit Rupaka comparing the कृपाम्‌ with नौ (boat). Therefore it is an example of एकदेशविवर्ति सावयवं.

सावयवं can also have श्लिष्टं

1(A)(1)समस्तवस्तुवृत्ति सावयवं श्लिष्टं

In Niravayava Rupaka, there is only description of the angin /avayavin, and not of the avayava.
Niravayava rupaka is of two types: Kevalam and maalaarupam

2(A) केवलं निरवयवं

वातंधयगिरिजातं स्फीतं धनमखिलशरणमवदातम्‌।

ख्यातं धनपतिगीतं ध्यातं धवलयति हृत्सरोजातम्‌ ॥

Here हृत्सरोजातम्‌ is a Rupaka, which is not supported by a bunch of other Rupaka. Therefore it is an example of केवलं निरवयवं.

2(B) निरवयवं मालारूपकं

सौन्दर्यबृन्दकन्दं मुचुकुन्दानन्दचन्दनं वन्दे ।

वन्दारूकबृन्दारकमन्दारं दन्दशूकशिखरीन्दुम्‌ ॥

Here, दन्दशूकशिखरीन्दुम्‌ has many padaartha to support it. Therefore it it an example of niravayava maalaarupakam

2(B)(1)अश्लिष्टानेकविषयकानेकारोपो

नयने नलिने वदनं सदनं लक्ष्म्यास्तव स्मितं त्वमृतम्‌ ।

गण्डौ दर्पणखण्डौ कुण्डलिवेतण्डशिखरिर्मातण्ड ॥
There is no Shlesh. Therefore it is an example of अश्लिष्टानेकविषयकानेकारोपो.

Here, thre is Shlesh. Therefore it is an example of श्लेषनिबन्धनानेकारोपो.

अक्षि तव पुण्डरीकं कुमुदं स्मितमञ्जनं प्रभाविसरम्‌ ।
चरितं तु सार्वभौमं जानंस्त्वां वेद्मि दिग्गजात्मानम्‌ ॥

Here in the first stanza, there is maalaaniravayava alankaara for the feet of the Lord. Whereas in the second stanza there is maalaaniravayava alankaara for the idol of the Lord.

3. परंपरितम्‌
Definition:
एकं विषयि यद्यन्यविषय्यन्वितमुच्यते ।
कार्यकारणभावेन स्यात्परंपरितं तदा ॥
When one upamaana (aaropya) is also meant to be aaropya for another because of common feature, it is known as Paramparitam

Example:

Here, jaladhi - taraNi rupaka signifies taraNi - karuNa rupaka. Therefore, the meaning of one rupaka is dependent on one other rupaka. This is known as paramparita.

सुविपुलशुभगुणजलनिधिफणगिरिराजपतिकृपागङ्गाम्‌ ।
अवगाह्य नराश्शिशिरां न विगाहन्ते कदा पि तापकथाम्‌ ॥

श्लिष्टाश्लिष्टविभेदेन तत्परंपरितं द्विधा ।

केवलं मालिका चेति तद्द्वयं द्विविधं भवेत्‌ ॥

एवमष्टाविधं प्राचां मते रूपकमिष्यते ॥

Paramparitam is of two types - Shlishta and Ashlishta and these two types are further classified as - Kevalam and Maalaarupam. Thus there are four types of Paramparitam. And in toto there are eight types of Rupaka according to the earlier / eastern Grammarians.

1.केवलं श्लिष्टपरंपरितम्‌
e.g.

अवनाय च भुवनानां भवनमकार्षिश्श्रताब्जभुवन हरे ॥

भगवति सलिलत्वारोपः
श्रितेषु अब्जत्वारोपः
Therefore it is paramparitam, and it is not maalaarupam and nor is it Shlishta. Therefore it is an example of शुद्धपरंपरितं केवलम्‌.

Here घनसार is बिम्ब.
My effort to add something to the personality of the One who is praised so greatly by the Shruti is just effort of adding fragrance to the already fragrant camphor.

रुपके बिम्बप्रतिबिम्बभावासंभवान्नेदं रूपकमिति वदतां वचनं त्वनादर्तव्यम्‌
(some people believe that it is not possible to have Bimbapratibimbabhaava in Rupaka. but according to the writer of this book , that view is not to be entertained at all)

त्वयि निग्रहसंकल्पः पयसिजनिलये दयासुधाजलधौ ।

वसनरुचा पल्लवितं हारगमुक्तागणेन कोरकितम्‌ ।
कौस्तुभमणीना फलितं श्रीविहृतिवनं हरेरुरो ललितम्‌ ।।

According to the writer of this book, Rupaka can have bimbapratibimbabhaava.

Rupaka is also of the same types as upamaa.

1. उपात्तोsनुगामी

दुर्विषहविषमविषनिभजन्मजरादिव्यधातुरान्लोकान्‌ ।
पालयितुं विकिरसि फणिशैलपते ननु कटाक्षममृतं त्वम्‌ ॥
