ananvaya alankara (अनन्वय)

characteristics:

अनन्वयो यदेकस्यैवोपमानोपमेयता॥

When the उपमान and उपमेय are same, it is known as अनन्वय.


Examples:

सविधे विचरति भगवति समुदितमेचकिमवृषशिखरिशिखरम्‌।

प्रावृषि विजृम्भमाणैरम्भोदैरिव करम्भितं भाति॥

when there are two simily proclaiming words are used consecutively, it means that the simily is not that direct and had to be fetched from far. Thus in principal, the उपमेय is such that there is no fitting उपमान for it. Therefore it is actually an example of अनन्वय.

Here, इव and करम्भितं both are used and therefore this is an example of अनन्वय.


विधुतत्रिविधावधिकं वेदस्त्वां वदतु निस्समं भगवन्‌।

निपुणं विचिन्तने पुनरुपमा भवतो'स्ति ननु भवानेव॥

Here, it is mentioned that the vedas call you unmatchable or unparalleled. Therefore there is no further scope of simily and even if there is any subsequent simily, it is null and void. Therefore it is an example of अनन्वय.


अखिलं भुवनं विचितं तेषां स्वरुपमपि विदितम्‌।

अर्थिजनेप्सितदाने तीर्थगिरीश त्वमेव तव सदृशः॥

here, the tirthgiri mountain has been compared with itself in the quality of fulfilling the wishes of the pilgrims, therefore this is अनन्वय.


Just like upama alankara, the अनन्वय is also of पूर्णा and लुप्ता both types.

the पूर्णा is of six types as in upamaa.

example of पूर्णा are as follows:


श्रीश्श्रीर्यथा घनकृपा - श्रौतः वाक्यगः अनन्वयः

कमला कमलेव पूर्ण सौभाग्या। - श्रौतः समासगः अनन्वयः

नाथो'च्युतेन सदृशो'च्युत एव

हरिर्हितो हरिसदृक्षः॥ - आर्थः समासगः अनन्वयः

श्रीवेङ्कटाद्रिपतिवद्ध्येयश्श्रीवेंकटाद्रिपतिरेव। - आर्थः तद्धितगः अनन्वयः

श्रीश्रीनिवासपदवद्भक्तिर्श्रीनिवासपद एव॥ - श्रौतः तद्धितगः अनन्वयः


The धर्मलुप्ता is also of five types as in upamaa.

examples are the same as above with removal of the धर्म.

example: कमला यथैव कमला (removed saubhagya)


वाचकलुप्तः अनन्वयः is also similar to the upamaa.

examples are as follows:

a.क्यङ्‌ समासवाचकलुप्तः -

वेङ्कटभूमिधरो'यं वेङ्कटाभूमीधरायते सुमहान्‌।

तत्रवसन भगवानपि तत्रवसद्भगवदुज्ज्वलो जयति॥


b.कर्मकर्तणमुलोर्वाचकलुप्तः

वृषभाद्रिनाथदर्शं वृषभाचलनाथमग्रतः पश्यन्‌।

विततप्रमोदबाष्पस्सततं नन्दामि मन्नन्दम्‌॥


c.धर्मवाचकलुप्तः अनन्वयः as well as मालारुप अनन्वय

कौस्तुभति कौस्तुभो'यं लक्ष्माणति लक्ष्म हारति च हारः।

वक्षसि फणिगिरिबन्धोस्सिन्धोर्धुहिता च सिन्धुदुहितरति॥


d. वाचकधर्मोपमानलुप्ता

सलिलनिघिं गाम्भीर्ये तुलयन्तस्सन्ति कति कति न देवाः।

एष तु शेषगिरीशश्शेषगिरीशान्गाम्भीर्यः॥


e. all other types of lupta upamaa are either not possible or are very rude and non poetic. Therefore they are not shown here.


#There are two types of upamaa, upameyopamaa as well as ananvaya alankara अर्थशक्तिमूलानुध्वननविषय and शब्दशक्तिमूलानुध्वननविषय

A. शब्दशक्तिमूलानुध्वननविषय

example:
कटकोज्ज्वलपुन्नागो गन्धर्वकुलैरुदीर्णसौभाग्यः ।

धरणीभृच्चूडामणिरनणीयश्श्रीनिवासतां धत्ते॥

कटक - mountain ridge / capital city

पुन्नाग - trees of that name / valient man

गन्धर्व - a species of demigod / horse

धरणीभृत्‌ - mountain / king

श्रीनिवासता - the quality of being श्रीनिवास / श्रियः सम्पदः निवास: - the abode of wealth


Here, the alankara is elicited by the play of words rather than the arth. therefore it is an example of शब्दशक्तिमूलानुध्वननविषय.


B.अर्थशक्तिमूलानुध्वननविषय

असमानरोचिरहमित्यभिमानस्तव घनाघन महीयान्‌।

ननु नामाढौकिष्ठा न मनागपि वा फणाभृदचलशिखाम्‌॥
