upamaa alankaara - part III (वाचकलुप्तोपमा - upamaa with elision of वाचक)

In this upamaa there is elision of वाचक.
It means that you have to import the वाचक to get the full meaning of the sentence.

Most common वाचक used in sanskrit is "इव". The English translation of this word would be "like" or "such as" or "as if". In all sense it shows "simily".

Now let's take an example.

चन्दिररुचिरनिटालं सुन्दरतरवार्षिकाम्बुदविनीलं |
मन्दरधरमहिगिरिपतिकन्दरधामास्तु नाम हृदि धाम ||

Here चन्दिर - moon, रुचिर - beutiful, निटाल -forehead
अम्बुद- cloud, विनीलं - blue.

Here the meaning is
चन्दिर इव रुचिरं (as beautiful as the moon)
and
वार्षिकाम्बुदमिव विनीलं (as blue as the yearly monsoon clouds).

But there is no mention of the word इव in the couplet.
Thus the word इव has been elided and has to be imported to understand the meaning of hte sentence. Therefore this is an example of वाचकलुप्तोपमा.
